Prescription drug diversion is a huge and growing problem in Utah and across America. In Utah alone, prescription drug abuse deaths has grown 859% in recent years. In 2007, there were 476 deaths related to drug overdoses. Of that total, 307 were attributed to prescription/over the counter drugs. The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud estimates that 80% of all prescription drug diversions end up being paid for by insurance companies. This is an estimated cost of $72 BILLION per year to insurance carriers.
As a result, we all suffer, both financially (increased insurance premiums/co-pays) and emotionally (lost lives to overdoses). You can make a difference by getting involved and reporting drug diversions. Reporting a friend or family member may be their only hope to getting the help they need to fight their addiction.
URxNET is coordinating its efforts with insurance companies, state and local law enforcement agencies, other entities, and the community, to combat this issue head-on. We are pursuing this epidemic in an effort to make a difference for our community.
